The Network of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) shows the variety of cultural expressions that communities, groups or individuals themselves recognize as intangible cultural heritage. They have registered this ICH in the Network. The Dutch Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage is therefore not responsible for the content of the description.

Description

Collecting is a very personal and direct way of giving help to charities. Every year more than 700,000 volunteers with a collection box go to the doors to raise money for a good cause. This method of collection, the door-to-door collection, only happens in the Netherlands.

Every year over 700,000 volunteers go to the streets in the Netherlands to collect door to door for a good cause. They do this because they want to do something good for society and because the charity in question is close to their heart. There is no clear description of the kind of people who keep this intangible cultural heritage alive and pass it on. But one thing is certain, they have a heart for the business. By taking their children by the hand with them, the importance of collecting is passed on at a young age. Namely that thanks to the collectors and the proceeds of the collection, charities can work towards a better world.

The Dutch have always been a generous people. Already in the seventeenth century it was common for those who had something to give, to contribute to the poor. In addition to the collection in the church, door-to-door collections were done almost weekly. And in the event of disasters, campaigns were also organized in which collectors sometimes visited the doors with the collection boxes throughout the country. And that has not really changed to this day. Volunteers are still go to the streets with their collection box to collect money for people or goals that need it.
