2024: Reflection Year on the Inventory

More than 10 years ago, the Netherlands ratified the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Since 2012, the Dutch Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage (KIEN) has been working on the implementation of this convention, via the Network and the Inventory Intangible Heritage in thet Netherlands.

Reflection

In 2024 we will examine the way in which we inventory intangible heritage in the Netherlands. We sit down with people who practice intangible heritage, (heritage) organizations and governments. For example, we want to jointly investigate whether our current (registration) procedure for the Inventory meets the different needs of society and the intangible heritage field. To properly include the voice of heritage communities, we are establishing a special think tank of practitioners of intangible heritage.

What does this mean in 2024?

Because of this process, we will temporarily not start any new training courses for the Inventory in 2024 and no new intangible heritage will be added to the Inventory . There will also be no updates of safeguarding plans temporarily in 2024. Intangible heritage can still be registered for the Network . You can also still indicate your interest in the Inventory. We are working towards guiding communities again in 2025 to include their intangible heritage in the Inventory.

KIEN remains available

KIEN will remain operational in 2024 and we will continue to support communities with safeguarding. We organize training, activities and a Intangible Heritage Day. That doesn't change.

We will share regular updates on this reflection process. If you have any questions about this, we would love to hear from you. Also see the question and explanation below on this topic.

Question and explanation

My ICH is already in the Inventory. What does this mean for me?

  • Nothing changes for you. We still organize training and Intangible Heritage days and we continue to provide support in safeguarding.

I would like to register my ICH for the Inventory, do I have to wait now?

  • After registering in the Network, we ask you to wait a moment if you want to proceed to the Inventory. You can inform us of your interest in the Inventory. We will contact you in 2025 about the new options.

Will KIEN be closed in 2024?

  • No, KIEN remains open and accessible. We still support communities in safeguarding. All activities and research will continue as normal, but no new forms of intangible heritage will be added to the Inventory in 2024 and we will not update any safeguarding plans.

The periodic updating of my intangible heritage is planned for 2024. Will this continue?

  • No, we also investigate the method of updating the safeguarding plans. In 2025, we will again update the safeguarding of your intangible heritage together with you.

I have a question for KIEN, how can I ask it?

  • We can be reached by e-mail at info@immaterialerfgoed.nl . Would you like to contact us by telephone? Then call +31(0)263576113. On this page you will find an overview of all contact details.

Are training courses provided?

  • The Building a Safeguarding Plan training will not be given in 2024. This is part of the current nomination process for the Inventory. We do organize training on various aspects of safeguarding. Keep an eye on our activities overview and/or sign up for our newsletter .

How much ICH is currently in the Inventory?

What will change?

  • We do not yet know exactly whether and how we will adjust the (registration) process of the current Inventory. We will continue to inform communities about this through our website, newsletter and other communication channels.

Do we as practitioners have a say? I would like to contribute ideas or provide feedback, how can I register for this?

  • We are establishing a dedicated think tank of heritage communities and practitioners. We would appreciate it if you would like to share your thoughts or provide feedback. You can let us know via info@immaterialerfgoed.nl .
