De Maastrichtse Heiligdomsvaart is a religious pilgrimage to the Tomb of St. Servatius in his Basilica in Maastricht that has existed since the thirteenth century . This pilgrimage is held once every 7 years. The cities of Aachen, Hasselt, Tongeren and Susteren have a similar tradition. In Maastricht, during a 10-day program, various religious and cultural events take place during the Heiligdomsvaart, including two large Ommegangen through the old city center (around 2000 participants) on Sundays. This tradition always attracts tens of thousands of visitors from the city, region and nationally / internationally.
The Network of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) shows the variety of cultural expressions that communities, groups or individuals themselves recognize as intangible cultural heritage. They have registered this ICH in the Network. The Dutch Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage is therefore not responsible for the content of the description.
