Description

The Sunte Mart'n (Saint Martin) is an annual fair on the first Monday of November in Wierden. The Jennechiesmarkt (girls' market) is part of this. The last four editions of the Jennechiesmarkt were organized for children from the local primary schools. It is now a project to learn about the history of the Sunte Mart'n and the butchering season in the nineteenth century.

The whole of Wierden comes to the Sunte Mart'n and also people from the wider area take a day off to visit the market. The municipality is responsible for the market, while the Jennchiesmarkt and other surrounding activities are organized by the Sunte Mart'n Foundation. There are many primary school pupils who participate in the contemporary Jennechiesmarkt.

The Sunte Mart'n was originally a Saint Martin's market that has been organized in Wierden for 150 years. Cattle and merchandise were traded here and new workers were contracted for after the winter. Later a funfair and other activities were added. In the 1950s, the Jennechiesmarkt was also added as an element: a wedding market where participants bought half a lot and the person with the other half had to look for it. Winners could win a cow.
